Case Studies

Introduction

In order to show you what life is like as a Projects Abroad Pro volunteer, we have interviewed previous volunteers and asked them about their time overseas. We hope that these case studies will help to explain exactly what a Projects Abroad Pro volunteer does, how they put their skills and qualifications to use and the incredible experience that awaits you in one of our 16 destinations in the developing world.

Business Development

Ian Bromage

Ian Bromage / Mongolia

Ian travelled to Mongolia for three months, using his experience gained from years of working with big business to help a developing software company in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar.

Education

Andrea Martins

Andrea Martins / Mexico

As a career gapper (and 'older' person at 28) I was initially paranoid about being the oldest volunteer out there but I soon enjoyed spending time with the young, care-free students, although I met a few older volunteers older than me ...

Chetna Patel

Chetna Patel / Sri Lanka

I have traveled to many different countries, both for pleasure and to work, but none have given me such a satisfying or rewarding experience as my time spent in Sri Lanka. I wouldn't change a single bit of it, and I'd return tomorrow if I had the chance.

Daphne Joyce Wake

Daphne Joyce Wake / Jamaica

All three projects that I worked on went really well. I enjoyed all aspects of each project and I feel that I gained a valuable insight into Jamaica, its people and its culture. I chose Projects Abroad Pro because their information, presentation and friendly attitude were exceptional; they guided me through every stage of my application, travel arrangements, placements and throughout my time in Jamaica ...

David Flaschner

David Flaschner / Ghana

My time in Ghana was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. I was able to work with Ghanaian coaches and players of all ages, teaching them different ways to train and also learning from their methods.

Deborah Foti

Deborah Foti / Ghana

I am a type A personality and knew from previous Peace Corps experience I had to slow down my pace and most importantly had to allow each day to develop as it was supposed to rather than get overly focused on my agenda.

Juliana Lodge

Juliana Lodge / Romania

Leave your expectations at the airport, throw yourself into your time here wholeheartedly and be rewarded with one of the best experiences of your life.

Engineering

Edward Hutchinson

Edward Hutchinson / Jamaica

The Community Building Project which Projects Abroad Pro are running in Jamaica offered me both the opportunity to travel outside of Europe and to get my hands dirty. Whilst my experience in Jamaica has only lasted three weeks, I feel as though I have experienced more of the real Jamaica than I would have had I spent three months in any of the holiday resorts.

Human Rights

Eric McAdamis

Eric McAdamis / Ghana

Overall, I had an incredible experience in Ghana and I could not have asked for more from Projects Abroad and CHRI. I was made to feel safe and welcome from the time I stepped off the plane until the time I made my heart-wrenching farewells.

Dr. James D'Agostino, MD / Cambodia

Marjorie Harris

Marjorie Harris / Argentina,Bolivia,Mexico,Peru

In Peru I helped Tim develop his work with Primary Teachers. I took out Big Books to use and leave as samples which teachers can read with the children to help their vocabulary and imagery of story. I helped him to train the staff in making their books with their children and spoke to a training group in Cusco.

Rosemary Prebble

Rosemary Prebble / Romania

Romania had been in my head since the revolution but I didn't actually imagine I would ever go there. When I decided to retire from my job as a teaching assistant, specialising in special needs, I found myself on the internet searching for voluntary work with children in Romania.
