This volunteer sports project helps talented young players in a football academy.

Cantonments Football Club aims to teach players and improve their skills. They hope that the best players will get the chance to have a successful career either in Ghana or overseas.

How can volunteer architects help in Ghana?

You can use your experience as a football coach to help the staff at Cantonments FC. You can work on tasks such as:

• Working with existing coaches to plan, run and evaluate daily training sessions for adult and youth teams.
• Working with the club’s Technical Director to help design a coaching syllabus for the club including:
  • General outcomes for each age group
  • Age-specific guidelines
  • Physical, technical and tactical games and exercises appropriate for each age group
• Working with existing coaches to offer them advice on how to implement the new coaching syllabus.
• Working with the club Technical Director to help evaluate the existing coaches. Also looking at ways to improve their coaching skills.
• Working with other volunteers and the club’s General Manager to produce content for the club website. This will include match reports, a volunteer blog and interviews with players and staff.

A typical working day will start at 9am with a two hour training session. There will then be a break until around 4pm when you will coach another 2 hour session. The time between these sessions will be used to meet with staff. You will be able to plan sessions and hold training workshops.

Matches are played every weekend and you will be able to choose whether or not to attend.

This project runs all year round so you can join at any time. You decide how much time you can spare and we will help you get the most out of it.

What will I gain from this project?

We understand that your time is valuable so it is only fair that you benefit from your trip to Ghana. You will get the chance to work with talented players who are eager to learn. You will have the freedom to experiment and suggest new ideas for training sessions. You will also learn new methods from the Ghanaian coaches who have spent years working in football.

You will also be able to leave a lasting legacy by training staff and helping them improve. This will help the club for future generations.

You will spend time in the local community of Cantonments, learning about a new culture and way of life. Players, staff and local people will want to hear about your life back home and your family and friends. We call this ‘cultural exchange’ and we think it helps our volunteers gain a new perspective on life.

What will Projects Abroad PRO provide?

We have over 19 years’ experience of running volunteer projects. We provide you with the following support to make sure your time in Ghana is successful and enjoyable:

• Safe accommodation with a Ghanaian family close to your project.
• Friendly and dedicated local staff available to help 24 hours a day.
• A member of staff to meet you at the airport when you arrive.
• Comprehensive medical and travel insurance.
• Social events with other volunteers such as a weekly quiz night.

What skills or qualifications do I need?

If you have completed at least an FA Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Football (or equivalent qualification from your national association) then you are perfectly suited to this project. Alternatively, we are also looking for anyone who has taken part in the FA Youth Award.
