Be a volunteer teacher in India

Volunteer as a Teacher in India

Teaching in India

On this voluntary teaching project you will work at a school for the physically and mentally disabled or a government school for girls.

Able bodied pupils study alongside the disabled at the Amar Seva Sangam institution near Madurai. This is a unique programme where the children learn together in the same classes. This promotes tolerance, understanding and shared culture.

There is also scope to work at Veli Vediyar Corporation Girls Secondary School.

How can volunteer teachers help in India?

You can use your knowledge and training to help local staff as a volunteer teacher. You can work on tasks such as:

  • Teaching English abroad in either a primary or middle school, depending on your experience, including tasks such as:
    • Planning, preparing and delivering lessons to a range of classes.
    • Marking work, giving appropriate feedback and maintaining records of pupils' progress and development.
    • Supervising and supporting the work of teaching assistants, trainee teachers and newly qualified teachers.
    • Devising, writing and producing new materials, including audio and visual resources.
  • Working with existing staff to assess and improve current standards of teaching methodology and subject content.
  • Observing classes in order to assess existing teaching staff, offer advice and set goals for their development
  • Organising and running training clinics for Projects Abroad volunteers working with other schools (optional).

A typical working day will run from 9am to 5pm with a one hour lunch break. The project is based around the Amar Seva Sangam’s middle school where pupils are aged between 10 and 13. However, there is also a day care centre for children aged 6 to 15 if you would prefer to teach a wider age group. The school has access to a trained physiotherapist so you will not be required to help in this area.

This project runs all year round so you can join at any time. You decide how much time you can spare and we will help you get the most out of it.

What will I gain from this project?

You will see first hand how teachers at the Amar Seva Sangam school manage a classroom and integrate a large number of pupils with special educational needs. This eye opening experience will teach you new skills and provide a challenging environment. You will also be able to draw on your own expertise to offer new solutions to problems facing the Indian teachers. Everyone involved will benefit from this spirit of cooperation.

Through educating the young children at the school, you will learn about Indian culture and way of life. Staff and pupils will want to hear about your life back home and your family and friends. We call this ‘cultural exchange’ and we think it helps our volunteers gain a new perspective on life.
