Volunteer Psychologists needed in Mongolia

Volunteer Psychologist
This voluntary psychology project helps treat women who have been victims of physical abuse. You can work with the National Centre Against Violence in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
It is generally accepted that around one third of women in Mongolia suffer from domestic abuse. This is seen as a family matter and makes the situation even worse. This has been debated for over 17 years and is now becoming an important issue in Mongolian society.
This project is ideal for anyone qualified looking for voluntary work abroad or psychologists on a career break.
Here you will find answers to the following questions:

How can volunteer psychologists help in Mongolia?
As a volunteer psychologist you can use your knowledge and training to help local staff. You can work on tasks such as:
- Helping local staff to assess and treat the needs of women and children, including tasks such as:
- Performing psychometric tests, interviews and behavioural observation.
- Devising and monitoring appropriate programmes of treatment.
- Offering therapy for difficulties relating to domestic abuse.
- Assisting a counselling programme for abused woman and children.
- Discussing with local staff ways of improving the Centre’s methods of care.
- Creating a report highlighting overall assessments, findings and conclusions from your work in order to help future psychologists who may visit the project.
The National Centre Against Violence is the first Government organisation in Mongolia to work against violence directed at women and children. It has been running since 1995 and has 14 branches in local provinces. As well as caring for victims, the Centre also takes part in educational and campaign work. You are more than welcome to help them in this area.
You will be expected to work from around 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. The centre has around 25-30 employees and you will be able to work with them and share ideas.
Please note: patients may not be able to communicate in English. Your project supervisor and Projects Abroad staff will provide support where possible.
This project runs all year round so you can join at any time. You decide how much time you can spare and we will help you get the most out of it.
What will I gain from this project?
This voluntary work abroad will allow you to gain experience of working in the developing world. You will be able to work alongside fellow professionals and share ideas about treatments. You will also improve your ability to think creatively and work under pressure with a lack of resources and cultural differences.
Through working with victims of abuse and local staff, you will learn about Mongolian culture and way of life. They will want to hear about your life back home and your family and friends. We call this ‘cultural exchange’ and we think it helps our volunteers gain a new perspective on life.
