Volunteer Biologists needed in Peru

Biologist in Peru
This volunteer biology project focuses on performing biodiversity studies in the Amazon rainforest.
Our ecological reserve performs important conservation, animal release and research work. You will use your skills and training in the field of scientific ecology to participate in our research on the biodiversity of the region and our studies of animal behaviour.
Here you will find answers to the following questions:
How can volunteer biologists help in Peru?
What will I gain from this project?
What will Projects Abroad PRO provide?
What skills or qualifications do I need?
How do I apply to join this project?
How can volunteer biologists help in Peru?
As a volunteer biologist you can use your knowledge and training to help local staff. You can work on tasks such as:
- Working with a team of researchers compiling reports on the condition and location of plants and animals in the 476 hectare ecological reserve.
- Organising and running training clinics for Projects Abroad volunteers working at the site (optional)
- Take part in tasks and projects that are not directly related to environmental protection, such as fundraising, purchasing equipment, preparation of annual reports for government agencies and partners
The project is based at the Taricaya Ecological Reserve. All volunteers live at the research centre in the heart of the rainforest.
The rainforest of the Peruvian Amazon is home to extraordinary ecosystems, often hosting species of animals, birds and plants that are found nowhere else on the planet. These ancient forests are one of the many remarkable natural features of Peru. However, for many years, the area suffers from deforestation and poaching, which lead to disruption of the forest ecosystem.
Taricaya ecological reserve is the first research centre and animal reintroduction project officially recognised by the Peruvian state. The responsibilities at the ecological reserve include caring for sick animals before releasing them into the wild. It also conducts educational campaigns to local people on methods of sustainable agriculture.
What will I gain from this project?
You will gain first hand experience of working in one of the most bio diverse areas on the planet. You will work alongside staff who are qualified in their field. They will be able to give you advice and help you adapt to life in the rainforest. You will also be part of published research which you can use for future references.
