You will work with staff at the District Sanitaire hospital in order to share ideas and provide much-needed care for patients. You will also have the chance to perform educational work in smaller clinics.

How can volunteer midwives help in Senegal?
You can use your knowledge and training to help local staff as a volunteer midwife. You can work on tasks such as:
- Offering care to childbearing women during pregnancy, labour and birth.
- Caring for newborn children and assisting the mother with breastfeeding.
- Providing gynecological exams/consultations and family planning information.
- Taking part in workshops with local staff in order to share ideas.
- Providing support for a health care assistant at the Talibé centre.
Your main project will be at the District Sanitaire hospital, the second largest hospital in St Louis. You can also combine this with working at the Talibé clinic if you wish. These clinics are based in our centers for the street children. They consist of one room which is dedicated to giving the children the healthcare they desperately need.
The work you perform at the Talibé clinic will involve more general medical tasks, not specifically focusing on midwifery. However, there may be opportunities for you to provide education on sexual health.
Your shift pattern can be agreed with your supervisor and our local staff. Most volunteers choose to work Monday to Friday so they have their weekends free.
It is important to note that you will need to speak French to at least an intermediate level to take part in this project.
This project runs all year round. You decide how much time you can spare and we will help you get the most out of it.
What will I gain from this project?

Midwifery volunteer work in Senegal
This voluntary work abroad will give you the chance to work alongside professionals from a completely different environment. You will be able to share ideas with them and see how childbirth is supervised in the developing world. You will need to work with limited facilities and this will force you to push yourself and improve your own skills
You will spend time with local people, including staff, patients and your host family. They will want to hear about your life back home and you will also learn about their culture and way of life. We call this ‘cultural exchange’ and we think it helps our volunteers gain a new perspective on life.
