This volunteer development project works with a development charity specialising in microfinance programmes. Their aim is to help entrepreneurs and small businesses in Tanzania.

Many of these businesses need advice in areas such as diversifying their products, market stall placement and sharing resources. The charity itself also needs help to develop its services and reach a wider range of people.

How can volunteer business consultants help in Tanzania?

As a volunteer business consultant you can use your knowledge and training to help local entrepreneurs. You can work on tasks such as:

• Helping with staff from small Tanzanian enterprises to help them with tasks such as:
  • Assessing current business plans and advising on possible improvements.
  • Developing a marketing strategy.
  • Analysing the scope for creating a customer database system
  • Assessing if further investment is required
  • Assessing how profit can be maximised
• Working with staff from an international development charity to evaluate their various programmes and assess the merits of new projects.
• Providing help with fundraising applications and drafting reports.

Business Consultants

This project focuses on many small enterprises so there are a large variety of areas in which you may be working. An example of an existing project is the HIV Grants Initiative in the village of Ngaramtoni.  Grants and loans are given to individuals affected by HIV which allows them to generate an income for their families.

You will be able to work out an exact schedule with your project supervisor. You may want to focus on one business or try to help a variety of entrepreneurs.

This project runs all year round so you can join at any time. You decide how much time you can spare and we will make arrangements based on the information you provide.

What will I gain from this project?

You will gain valuable experience in how to develop an enterprise in a foreign country and a unique insight into how microcredit can help disadvantaged communities. This project can also provide you with a real sense of achievement given that you are provided an aim and objectives at the outset.

You will spend time in a completely new environment, learning about a different culture and way of life. Tanzanians and other volunteers will want to hear about your life back home and your family and friends. We call this ‘cultural exchange’ and we think it helps our volunteers gain a new perspective on life.

What skills or qualifications do I need?
