Be a Volunteer Nurse in Togo

Volunteer as a nurse in Togo
This voluntary medical project works with state and private hospitals in Lomé, Togo. You can help local staff who are overworked and underpaid.
Much of the nursing work in Togolese hospitals is passed on to medical students who are not yet fully qualified. This is because there are not enough professional nurses. You can really make a difference and help local patients and nursing staff.
This project is ideal for anyone qualified looking for voluntary work abroad or nurses on a career break.
Here you will find answers to the following questions:

How can volunteer nurses help in Togo?
As a volunteer nurse you can use your knowledge and training to help local staff. You can work on tasks such as:
- Helping existing staff to treat patients, including:
- Dressing wounds, monitoring pulse, blood pressure and temperature etc.
- Checking and administering drugs and injections.
- Setting up drips and blood transfusions.
- Coordinating medical outreach programmes within nearby towns and villages.
- Observing and assessing the work of local student and junior nurses and teaching them new skills where appropriate.
- Working at a local orphanage to help with dressing cuts and wounds, teaching about basic hygiene and prevention of diseases.
- Holding discussion groups at the orphanage about personal and sexual education.
Hospitals in Togo are normally busiest in the mornings so this is when you will perform most of your work. However, you will be able to also work some night shifts if you are interested. You will also have the chance to spend some time in rural clinics.
If you are interested in working at the orphanage then you will spend afternoons and evenings working there.
Your work will take place from Monday to Friday and an exact schedule will be organised by your project supervisor when you arrive.
It is important to note that you will need to speak French to at least an intermediate level to take part in this project.
This project runs all year round so you can join at any time. You decide how much time you can spare and we will help you get the most out of it.
What will I gain from this project?

Nursing volunteer work in Togo
This voluntary work abroad will give you the chance to experience diseases and illnesses that are uncommon in your home country. You will be able to learn from local staff and discuss new ideas. Trainee nurses will also be keen to learn from your experience and you can really make a difference in this area.
You will be able to learn about Togo’s traditions, culture and way of life. Staff at the hospital and members of your host family will also want to hear about your life back home and your family and friends. We call this ‘cultural exchange’ and we think it helps our volunteers gain a new perspective on life.
