Volunteer Speech Therapists needed in Togo

Volunteer as a Speech Therapist in Togo

Speech Therapist

This volunteer speech therapy project helps children with mental and physical disabilities in Lome, Togo. You can work with an NGO that specialises providing treatment to children.

Mental and physical disability is a huge problem in Togo. Much of this stems from poor conditions for treating mothers before and during childbirth. In addition, the profession of speech therapy is relatively new and people are naturally uncertain of it.

On this project the aim is to provide much needed treatment. However, there is also a secondary role of promoting speech therapy. Campaigning in local communities and educating parents can make a huge difference.

This project is perfect for anyone considering voluntary work abroad or speech therapists on a career break.

How can volunteer speech therapists help in Togo?

You can use your knowledge and training to help local staff as a volunteer speech therapist. You can work on tasks such as:

  • Providing treatment for children with mental and physical disabilities through individual sessions.
  • Holding creative workshops with groups of children.
  • Working with local mothers to provide support and education.
  • Holding workshops with local staff to discuss new ideas and treatments.
  • Campaigning in local communities to raise awareness on the benefits of speech therapy.
  • Holding workshops with village chiefs and local teachers.

The organisation with which we work is a small NGO with limited funding. Its goal is to promote the development and independence of disabled people. There are currently 5 members of staff working there and providing treatment. The aim is to provide volunteers so that the NGO can reach out to more children and handle a greater workload.

You will work with the NGO on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. You will also spend time during the week helping pupils at a local deaf school. This will give you more variety and ensure that you are able to work with different groups of people.

This project runs all year and we are completely flexible about dates. You decide how much time you can spare and we will help you get the most out of it.

What will I gain from this project?

Voluntary Work in Speech Therapy in Togo

Speech Therapist

This voluntary work abroad will allow you to gain experience of how speech therapy is developing in different countries. You will get to work alongside trained professionals and share ideas. You will also see treatments and problems that are completely different from those you face in your home country. This can serve as an excellent learning opportunity.

You can also learn about Togolese life and culture by spending time in the local community. Staff and children will want to hear about your life back home and your family and friends. We call this ‘cultural exchange’ and we think it helps our volunteers gain a new perspective on life.

What will Projects Abroad PRO provide?

We have over 20 years’ experience of running volunteer projects. We provide you with the following support to make sure your time in Togo is successful and enjoyable:

  • A member of staff to meet you at the airport when you arrive.
  • Comprehensive medical and travel insurance.
  • Social events with other volunteers such as a weekend trip to a local tourist destination.
