PRO Newsletter no. 9 - July 2010 The three “Rs”: Reading, ‘Riting and ‘Rithmetic –that’s what children need to be taught andfancy subjects like computing and design are luxuries that most people in the developingworld don’t need and can’t afford. This traditional view is being challenged by anorganisation called iSchoolAfrica with whom we are working to provide inspiring IT lessonsfor pupils in South Africa. This month’s feature article sheds some light on this new projectand the way in which we are striving for equal access to technology and the benefits itprovides for all students, regardless of income or geographical location.
PRO Newsletter no. 8 - June 2010 Much of the world has been at a standstill for the last few weeks as the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament finally kicked off in South Africa. We have applications from volunteers throughout the world, many of whom will be supporting their nations in this year's competition. Furthermore, some are lucky enough to be working on projects in South Africa right now, soaking up the atmosphere and no doubt enjoying the football. In this month's feature article we take a closer look at the tournament and how it will affect Africa.
PRO Newsletter no. 7 - May 2010 Volunteering is for young people who want to have a good time overseas before heading to university, right? According to recent trends, this is way off the mark. Since launching Projects Abroad Pro in 2009, the number of older volunteers who have signed up to help in the developing world has increased dramatically and we are regularly taking calls from people of all ages who want to get involved. In our spotlight article this month we discuss possible reasons for this change in the average age of our volunteers and what it could mean for the future.
PRO Newsletter no. 6 - April 2010 The idea of "launching" a new destination could potentially lead to some people thinking that Projects Abroad Pro are teaming up with NASA and considering interstellar volunteering. While that might be something to think about for the future, the destination in question this month is Tanzania and any volunteers signing up to work there will find their feet firmly planted in one of Planet Earth's most exciting countries.
PRO Newsletter no. 5 - March 2010 What destination and project should you choose? Do you need a special visa? Can you talk to someone in destination before you leave? These are just some of the hundreds of questions we all have when starting out on the road to becoming a volunteer. In this month's issue of Pro-Active we have created our “Quick Guide to Volunteering for Grown Ups” that we hope will go some way to answering these questions.
PRO Newsletter no. 4 - February 2010 After last month’s issue focussed on the Haiti earthquake and our appeal fund set up to help the survivors, the Pro-Active team were hoping to produce a more uplifting newsletter for February. However, as many of you will know, the Cusco region where Projects Abroad Pro’s Peru Office is based was hit by severe flooding and mudslides towards the end of January.
