There are numerous worthwhile causes that go unnoticed due to small organisations not being able to afford to design their own website. By donating your time and expertise you can help them get their important message out to the world.

How can volunteer web designers help in Romania?

You can use your knowledge and training to help local staff as a volunteer web designer. You can work on tasks such as:

• Working with various institutions to help design and build websites, including work such as:
  • Finding answers to questions about why the site is needed, who the target audience will be, who the leading competitors are, etc.
  • Producing a design that will be attractive to the target user, has a logical navigation system and has all the features required.
  • Writing web pages using the required codes.
  • Testing the site for functionality in different browsers and at different resolutions.
  • Fixing any errors.
• Preparing and presenting workshops for existing staff to educate them about maintaining and updating the website. This will ensure that your work continues after you have gone.

Volunteers on this project can work with two different institutions. The Asociatia Atelier Secelean is a care centre for children aged 8-16. It gives them a chance to learn, play and make friends.

Alternatively, you could work with the ‘Helping Hands’ NGO. They focus on making life easier for people with severe mental disabilities. Their main activity is organising various events for the patients at a hospital for psychological diseases.

This project runs all year and we are completely flexible about dates. You decide how much time you can spare and we will help you get the most out of it.

What will I gain from this project?

This voluntary work abroad will provide experience of designing and building a website for foreign clients. At the same time, you will benefit from the challenge of teaching them how to update a website. This kind of work will improve your portfolio. It will also help if you want to work for NGOs or charitable companies in the future.

You will spend time in local communities, learning about a new culture and way of life. Staff will want to hear about your life back home and your family and friends. We call this ‘cultural exchange’ and we think it helps our volunteers gain a new perspective on life.
