How can volunteer IT teachers help in Sri Lanka?

You can use your knowledge and training to help local staff as a volunteer teacher. You can work on tasks such as:

  • Teaching IT skills to children in an IT Centre, including:
    • Marking pupils’ work.
    • Giving appropriate feedback.
    • Maintaining records of pupils' progress and development.
  • Taking extra sessions with A-level students in order to share your experiences of working in IT.
  • Help students in areas such as preparing CVs, career advice and interview techniques.
  • Working with existing staff to assess and improve current methods of teaching and the content of classes.

The Wadduwa IT Centre teaches pupils aged between 6 and 18 with class sizes of up to 15 pupils. It can take three volunteers at one time and there is a permanent member of staff with teaching experience.

It is also possible to teach IT in schools in nearby Panadura and Negumbo. Alternatively, you can combine teaching in these schools with the IT Centre work.

This project runs all year round so you can join at any time. You decide how much time you can spare and we will help you get the most out of it.

What will I gain from this project?

You will gain experience of teaching IT skills to people of various ages who do not speak English as a first language. This will be a challenge, but you will be able to share ideas with local Sri Lankan teachers. This could enhance your CV and demonstrate a willingness to help others that will be valued by future employers.

You will learn about Sri Lankan culture by interacting with the pupils at the IT Centre. Staff and pupils alike will want to hear about your life back home and your family and friends. We call this ‘cultural exchange’ and we think it helps our volunteers gain a new perspective on life.
