How can volunteer Science teachers help in Mexico?

You can use your knowledge and training to help local staff as a volunteer Science teacher. You can work on tasks such as:

  • Teaching science in a secondary school, including tasks such as:
    • Planning, preparing and delivering lessons to a range of classes.
    • Marking work, giving appropriate feedback and maintaining records of pupils' progress and development.
    • Supporting the work of teaching assistants, trainee teachers and newly qualified teachers.
  • Sharing ideas with existing staff for developing science lessons.
  • Taking part in extracurricular activities such as sports and music (optional).

We work with a secondary school in Guadalajara which is specifically looking for science teachers. A typical day in a secondary school in Mexico starts at 7:00am and finishes at 1:30pm, with a 30-minute lunch break. The day is divided into 4 or 5 classes each day.

There may also be the option to organise extracurricular activities in the afternoons. This might include sports, art or music.

Summer holidays in Mexico run from the end of June until mid-August. During this time summer classes are available in the town of Guzman. Schools also take two-week breaks around Easter and for Christmas during the last two weeks of December. There is no teaching available during these holidays.

Other than the dates mentioned above this project is very flexible. You decide how much time you can spare and we will help you get the most out of it.

Voluntary Science Teaching Opportunities in Mexico

Volunteers

This voluntary work abroad will allow you to gain experience of teaching in the developing world. You will face challenges such as a lack of resources. This will improve your ability to think creatively. You will also be able to share ideas with local staff and learn from their experiences.

Through educating the students at your chosen school, you will learn about Mexico’s culture and way of life. Staff and pupils will want to hear about your life back home and your family and friends. We call this ‘cultural exchange’ and we think it helps our volunteers gain a new perspective on life.
