How can volunteer teachers help in Bolivia?
You can use your knowledge and training to help local staff as a volunteer teacher. You can work on tasks such as:
- Teaching English abroad in either a primary or secondary school or at university level, depending on your experience, including tasks such as:
- Planning, preparing and delivering lessons to a range of classes.
- Marking work, giving appropriate feedback and maintaining records of pupils' progress and development.
- Supervising and supporting the work of teaching assistants, trainee teachers and newly qualified teachers.
- Teaching conversational language skills at a university linguistics department.
- Working with existing staff to assess and improve lesson content.
- Observing classes in order to offer advice and set goals for teachers’ development
- Organising and running training clinics for Projects Abroad volunteers working with other schools (optional).
Primary and secondary schools work with children from the ages of 6 to 18. You will find class sizes tend to be around 30-35 pupils.
Volunteers working at the university (Universidad Mayor de San Simon) can teach languages such as German, Italian and Hebrew. Students range from 18 to 50 years of age and you will be expected to teach for around 18-20 hours a week.
You will need to speak Spanish to an intermediate level to get the most out of this project.
This project runs all year round so you can join at any time. During school holidays we arrange extra classes. You decide how much time you can spare and we will help you get the most out of it.
What will I gain from this project?
You will get the chance to learn from Bolivian teachers and professors, as well as giving them advice from your own experience. Teaching a language to a foreign audience is a challenge and you will learn to work under pressure. You will also be given some creative freedom to come up with new ideas for solving problems in the classroom.
Through educating the children at your chosen school, you will learn about Bolivian culture and way of life. Staff and pupils will want to hear about your life back home and your family and friends. We call this ‘cultural exchange’ and we think it helps our volunteers gain a new perspective on life.
