Voluntary environment jobs

We are looking for recent graduates, retired seniors or biologists and conservation workers on a career break to take part in voluntary environment jobs with Projects Abroad Pro. In order to ensure high standards we have listed a set of desired qualifications for each available post. Ideally, anyone interested in voluntary conservation abroad would also possess at least two years’ experience of working as a biologist or in conservation.

Projects Abroad Pro work with universities, scientific institutes and small organisations across the world to help with conservation of the environment. It is especially important for the developing world where the pollution of modern industry is a new challenge for them to face. While it is important and commendable that developing countries want to improve their infrastructure and expand businesses, the western world knows all too well what this means for areas of outstanding natural beauty and wildlife habitats. Areas such as the coral reefs in Thailand or African National Parks must be protected as the countries develop so that flora and fauna can continue to thrive and future generations won’t miss out on the chance to experience them. Volunteers with a skill or qualification can play an important role in the work we do by lending their experience and support to some of our conservation projects. You may wish to get stuck in and help with the physical conservation work or look more objectively at helping to improve the structure and working practices of the organisations involved. The choice is yours and we offer a number of projects to suit your needs and experience.

Voluntary conservation abroad

We see our projects as being a two-way process where you will gain just as much from the experience of voluntary conservation abroad as the people you are helping. It is a fact that as an experienced, qualified professional you will meet less experienced individuals who need you help and guidance to improve their standards. This process in itself can be both challenging and incredibly rewarding – it is the best way of ensuring that the work you do will be continued in the long-term. On the other hand, you are sure to meet experienced professionals in your industry who share your attitude, commitment and knowledge and are keen to offer advice for coping with the frustrations of the developing world. These people will want to discuss new ideas and share their expertise as well as looking for every opportunity to work with you to develop plans for the future. It is this peer to peer contact that makes our projects so special and ensures that your experience will be both professionally and personally fulfilling.

"So far I have done a lot of underwater clean-up work, removing fishing nets and debris from the reefs, I have been involved in beach clean-up operations, and I have got actively involved in the global Reef Check project, which involves monitoring local reefs to assess the threats to marine life and make decisions on what can be done to protect the reefs. The Projects Abroad staff have been working for years in conjunction with Thailand Marine National Parks and have a superb understanding of the local ecosystems which means the volunteers quickly understand the needs of the area and can make an active difference."

Skilled volunteers and our volunteer conservation work

There are numerous examples of volunteer conservation work on offer for skilled volunteers and you can access detailed descriptions of each post by clicking on the links at the top of the page. You can work in Thailand, Cambodia and Peru.

Even if you feel you do not possess the required skills or qualifications for these specialist roles, you can still help on the same projects. Please visit our website for more information about voluntary conservation with Projects Abroad.
