Medical work in Africa

We are looking for recent graduates, retired seniors or medical professionals on a career break to take part in voluntary medical jobs with Projects Abroad Pro. In order to ensure high standards we have listed a set of desired qualifications for each available post. Ideally, anyone interested in volunteer medical work abroad would also possess at least two years’ experience of providing professional medical care in a hospital, clinic or veterinary centre.

Projects Abroad Pro offer placements in hospitals, clinics and veterinary centres throughout the world; many of which are in some of the poorest and most underprivileged local communities. Even though many developing countries are improving their political and economic stability, there is still not enough emphasis being placed on providing free healthcare. In addition, the lack of quality education means that there are not enough medical experts available in the poorest communities. This is where volunteers with a skill or qualification are incredibly important because you will be able to use your knowledge and experience to help improve standards of care and ensure that current best practice is taught and implemented. Your placement can be tailored to your area of expertise or level of experience which means that you will be able to work efficiently and get the most out of your stay. For example, if you are a highly experienced doctor then your placement may involve relatively little treatment of patients and much more work improving the structure and management of your hospital or clinic. On the other hand, a qualified but less experienced physiotherapist may not be as confident managing staff and might prefer more hands on work with patients.

Volunteer medical work abroad

We see our projects as being a two-way process where you will gain just as much from the experience of volunteer medical work abroad as the people you are helping. It is a fact that as an experienced, qualified professional you will meet less experienced individuals who need you help and guidance to improve their standards. This process in itself can be both challenging and incredibly rewarding – it is the best way of ensuring that the work you do will be continued in the long-term. On the other hand, you are sure to meet experienced professionals in your industry who share your attitude, commitment and knowledge and are keen to offer advice for coping with the frustrations of the developing world. These people will want to discuss new ideas and share their expertise as well as looking for every opportunity to work with you to develop plans for the future. It is this peer to peer contact that makes our projects so special and ensures that your experience will be both professionally and personally fulfilling.

"My experience taught me so much more than what I had learnt in a hospital that lacked in facilities, expertise and equipment. I observed and helped in a few wards, spending most of my time in the maternity ward and saw a stark contrast with healthcare back home. The nurses and doctors in the hospital were great and it was from them I gained a new insight into the different attitudes people had towards their health and how they should treat according to the resources available."
