Volunteer Doctor in Mongolia

Volunteer as a Doctor in Mongolia

Volunteer Doctor with patients

This volunteer medical project works with a variety of medical institutions in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

Mongolia is traditionally a nomadic country, with Ulaanbaatar being by far the most developed city. This means that people come from far and wide to receive medical treatment. Unfortunately, many of the best qualified doctors end up emigrating to nearby countries like Russia.

This means that the Mongolian medical system needs help from experienced doctors. This project is perfect for anyone qualified considering voluntary work abroad or doctors on a career break.

Here you will find answers to the following questions:

How can volunteer doctors help in Mongolia?

What will I gain from this project?

What will Projects Abroad PRO provide?

What skills or qualifications do I need?

How do I apply to join this project?

How can volunteer doctors help in Mongolia?

You can use your knowledge and training to help local staff as a volunteer doctor. You can work on tasks such as:

  • Working with existing staff to treat patients, including:
    • Diagnosing medical conditions and planning or providing appropriate treatment.
    • Organising preventative medical programmes for individual patients.
    • Providing advice on medical care and immunisation etc.
  • Helping with medical outreach programmes within nearby towns and villages (optional).
  • Discussing ways of developing and improving working practice. This may include producing an action plan.
  • Observing and assessing the work of local trainee doctors.
  • Learning new working practices such as Mongolian traditional medicine.

You can work with large state hospitals, maternity hospitals and children’s centres. Whichever option you choose, you will be working alongside professional Mongolian doctors.

You will be expected to work Monday to Friday for around 8 hours per day. You will agree the exact work schedule with your project supervisor on your first day in Mongolia.

This project runs all year and we are completely flexible about dates. You decide how much time you can spare and we will help you get the most out of it.

What will I gain from this project?

Voluntary Work on Medical projects in Mongolia

Mongolia

This voluntary work abroad will help you gain experience of treating patients from deprived backgrounds. Many of the cases will involve conditions that you are not used to facing in your home country. You will also learn from fellow professionals who work at these institutions. They will want to share ideas with you and discuss ways of developing your skills.

You will learn about Mongolian culture and way of life by spending time in local communities. Staff and patients will want to hear about your life back home and your family and friends. We call this ‘cultural exchange’ and we think it helps our volunteers gain a new perspective on life.

What will Projects Abroad PRO provide?

  • Comprehensive medical and travel insurance.
  • Social events with other volunteers such as a weekly quiz night.
