Be a volunteer midwife in Mongolia

Volunteer as a Midwife in Mongolia

Volunteer with newborn baby in Mongolia

This volunteer medical project helps treat pregnant women and babies in hospitals and clinics in Ulaanbaatar.

Facilities in these institutions are basic and staff work with low budgets. Many patients travel large distances to receive antenatal and postnatal care in the capital city. Your experience as a qualified midwife can provide an alternative opinion in a different healthcare system.

Here you will find answers to the following questions:

How can volunteer midwives help in Mongolia?

What will I gain from this project?

What will Projects Abroad PRO provide?

What skills or qualifications do I need?

How do I apply to join this project?

How can volunteer midwives help in Mongolia?

You can use your knowledge and training to help local staff as a volunteer midwife. You can work on tasks such as:

  • Working in maternity services with pediatricians and psychologists.
  • Holding workshops to exchange skills and improve practices.
  • Produce literature for new parents giving advice on topics such as:
    • Breast feeding
    • Bathing
    • Making up feeds.
  • Caring for mother and babies after birth.
  • Arrange outreach projects where possible

We work with two different institutions, one of which is a large State Clinic with various other wards. It is also possible to work in a smaller State Maternal Home. In both cases you will need to work from around 8:30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.

This project runs all year round. You decide how much time you can spare and we will help you get the most out of it.

Please note: patients may not be able to communicate in English.  Your project supervisor and Projects Abroad staff will provide support where possible. Translators can be arranged if you are undertaking an outreach project.

What will I gain from this project?

You will gain first-hand experience of the methods used to treat mothers and children in Mongolia. You will work alongside qualified staff who will treat you as a colleague and help you with any problems. You will develop your ability to work under pressure in a foreign environment with a lack of resources.

You will spend a lot of time with your Mongolian colleagues and host family, learning about their culture and way of life. They will want to hear about your life back home and your family and friends. We call this ‘cultural exchange’ and we think it helps our volunteers gain a new perspective on life.

What will Projects Abroad PRO provide?

We have over 19 years’ experience of running volunteer projects. We provide you with the following support to make sure your time in Mongolia is successful and enjoyable:

  • Safe accommodation with a Mongolian family close to your project.
  • Friendly and dedicated local staff available to help 24 hours a day.
  • A member of staff to meet you at the airport when you arrive.
  • Comprehensive medical and travel insurance.
  • Social events with other volunteers such as a weekly quiz night.

What skills or qualifications do I need?

You need a Bachelors Degree in Midwifery, to be fully qualified and have a relevant licence to practice in your country of residence.

Please contact us if you think your knowledge may be useful on this project but do not have the required qualifications.
