Volunteer Nurses needed in India

Volunteer as a Nurse in India

Volunteer

This voluntary nursing project helps provide care for terminally ill patients in Madurai, India.

India has a large number of homeless and destitute citizens, many of whom are seriously ill or disabled. We work with a hospice that looks to care for these people and help them either recover or have a dignified death.

This project is perfect for anyone qualified who is looking to help in a developing country.

How can volunteer nurses help in India?

You can use your knowledge and training to help local staff as a volunteer nurse. You can work on tasks such as:

  • Helping existing staff to treat patients, including:
    • Dressing wounds, monitoring pulse, blood pressure and temperature etc.
    • Checking and administering drugs and injections.
    • Setting up drips and blood transfusions.
  • Helping, to wash, shave and dress patients.
  • Providing emotional support and paying attention to the patients.

St Joseph’s Hospice looks after around 300 patients from the local area. They take in people from the streets with the intention of providing medical care. Many if the patients are terminally ill and the staff provide much-needed support. Some of the patients fully recover and either leave the hospice or continue to work there.

You will be expected to work between 8 and 10 hours per day, Monday to Friday. It is expected that even fully qualified nurses spend their first couple of weeks learning the ropes and gaining the trust of local staff. This is part of the local culture.

This project runs all year round. You decide how much time you can spare and we will help you get the most out of it.

What will I gain from this project?

This voluntary work abroad will allow you to gain experience of medical care in the developing world. You will be working alongside experienced staff who will be happy to share ideas. You will also see treatments and illnesses that may not be familiar to you. This will give you the chance to broaden your knowledge while helping the local people.

You will spend a lot of time with local staff and patients. This will teach you about their culture and way of life. They will all want to hear about your life back home and your family and friends. We call this ‘cultural exchange’ and we think it helps our volunteers gain a new perspective on life.
