Volunteer Physiotherapists needed in Tanzania

Tanzania
This voluntary physiotherapy project provides treatment to children and adults in and around Arusha.
We work with a variety of small institutions that look after local people. The projects we work with currently don’t have any qualified physiotherapists therefore you will be providing a much needed service. Your help can make a huge difference in this area.
This project is perfect for anyone considering voluntary work abroad or physiotherapists on a career break. We are also looking for occupational therapists.
Here you will find answers to the following questions:
How can volunteer physiotherapists help in Tanzania?
What will I gain from this project?
What will Projects Abroad PRO provide?
What skills or qualifications do I need?
How do I apply to join this project?
How can volunteer physiotherapists help in Tanzania?
As a volunteer physiotherapist you can use your knowledge and training to help local staff. You can work on tasks such as:
- Examining patients to identify their physical problem.
- Developing and reviewing treatment programmes.
- Helping patients with joint and spinal problems.
- Writing patient case notes and reports.
- Educating and advising patients and their carers about how to manage their condition.
We work with a number of different institutions in Tanzania. You could be placed with a rehabilitation centre that cares for adults and children with mental and physical disabilities. Alternatively, we offer projects with much smaller organisations.
One such project is run by a group of nuns who help a local village community. There are around 30 children in this village with disabilities and many require physical therapy.
You will be expected to work from 6-8 hours a day, Monday to Friday. Our projects normally start early in the morning, around 7:30pm and finish around 4:30pm.
This project runs all year round so you can join at any time. You decide how much time you can spare and we will help you get the most out of it.
What will I gain from this project?
This voluntary work abroad will allow you to manage your own patients who do not receive much treatment. You will also be working in a challenging environment with a lack of resources. You will have a lot of influence and autonomy to shape this project.
Through interacting with local staff and patients, you will learn more about Tanzanian culture. Staff and patients will want to hear about your life back home and your family and friends. We call this ‘cultural exchange’ and we think it helps our volunteers gain a new perspective on life.
What will Projects Abroad PRO provide?
We have over 20 years’ experience of running volunteer projects. We provide you with the following support to make sure your time in Tanzania is successful and enjoyable:
- Safe accommodation with a Tanzanian family close to your project.
- Friendly and dedicated local staff available to help 24 hours a day.
- A member of staff to meet you at the airport when you arrive.
- Comprehensive medical and travel insurance.
- Social events with other volunteers such as a weekly quiz night.
What skills or qualifications do I need?
If you have completed at least a Bachelors Degree in Physiotherapy then you are perfectly suited to this project. We are also looking for qualified occupational therapists to take part in this project.
Please contact us if you think your knowledge may be useful on this project but do not have the required qualifications.
